Automobile Insurance: The Declarations PageEvery automobile insurance policy comes with a separate page called a "declarations page or sheet". In insurance lingo it is abbreviated as "dec sheet". On this sheet you will find all of the information regarding the premiums and coverage for your insured vehicle(s). This sheet includes your policy number, the policy period, and the initial date that the policy was first processed. The declarations page lists all of your insured vehicles and identifies them by their vehicle identification number (VIN), year, make, model and body type. In the sample declarations sheet below, there are two vehicles: a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV, and a 1998 Volkswagen Jetta. The liability coverage includes: Bodily Injury (BI), Uninsured Motorist (UM), Property Damage (PD); Medical Payments (Med Pay), Comprehensive (Comp), Collision (Coll) and All Risks and Automobile Death Benefits. Liability Coverage has specific limits. On the sample sheet, liability coverage is written out, but often it may be listed like 100/300/25. This means that for Bodily Injury, you are covered up to $100,000 per person and up to $300,000 per occurrence (accident), no matter how many people are injured. The 25 represents $25,000 coverage for Property Damage. Uninsured Motorist coverage is often written similar to that of Bodily Injury (BI: 30/60, 50/100, 100/300 or 500/1 mil, etc.), dependent upon the amount of coverage selected. The sample sheet shows $100,000 for each person and $300,000 for each accident (all persons combined). Often, but not always, the limits are the same for BI and UM. In addition to Bodily Injury, Property Damage and Uninsured Motorist coverage, a policy could also include Medical Pay coverage. This covers you and/or your passengers when an accident occurs and there are injuries involved - regardless of fault. The sample shows coverage in the amount of $5,000 per person. There is no "per occurrence" amount for Medical Pay coverage; each injured person's medical bills will be covered up to $5,000. Each type of coverage has a premium amount listed to the right. Tip: The higher your coverage limits, the higher the premium. In essence, you pay more to get more. Below the Liability and Medical Pay coverage sections are coverage information for your vehicle. Comprehensive coverage refers to damage to your vehicle that is caused by something other than a crash, such as vandalism, or theft. While there is no limit, there is a deductible. The sample sheet shows a $100 deductible which means that for claim in excess of $100, you would be responsible for $100 and any amount over the $100 would be paid by the insurance company. Collision coverage is for damage to your vehicle caused by an accident. Similar to comprehensive coverage, there is a deductible. The sample sheet shows a $200 deductible per claim. Tip: The higher the deductible, the lower the premium. All Risks coverage refers to insurance for mechanical breakdowns and wear and tear on your vehicle. It does not include coverage for damage from collisions or anything falling under comprehensive coverage. This sample sheet does not include coverage for this type of event. Tip: Many people don't buy this coverage. If you have a car three to five years old or newer, much of this may be covered under your warranty. Automobile Death Benefits covers you in the event of death in an accident. These benefits are paid according to a "limit code". The sample sheet provides $15,000 limits, paid to your beneficiary(ies). The sample sheet outlines any discounts for which you qualify for. There are good driver discounts for both named insureds and a multiple car discount. The sheet also has a space for a loss payee, which may be a bank or credit union that loaned you money to purchase the vehicle. They will holds the ownership certificate (Title), until the loan is paid off. Sample Automobile Policy Declarations Sheet
