Tips for Buying Age-Appropriate Toys

The most important aspect of purchasing toys for children at any age is to choose items that are developmentally appropriate for the skills, abilities and interests of the child.

Choose Age Appropriate Toys

• Check the age recommendations on toy packaging.
• Check for warning labels (possible choking hazards for children under a certain age).
• Ensure that the size and the weight of the toy will not cause danger to the child.

Look for High Quality Design and Excellence in Construction

• Check for sharp or rough edges, splinters or dangerous prongs or points.
• Are buttons, eyes, beads, ribbons, & other attachments securely sewn or attached?
• Watch for pieces and parts that can trap or pinch fingers.
• Use caution when purchasing toys at garage sales or thrift stores - the toy may be broken or was made before safety standards were instituted.

Use Caution When Buying Toys with Strings or Cords

• Pull toys or toys with a cord should have a break-away device if the cord is longer than 9".
• Toys with long strings, cords, or ribbons should not be purchased to hang in cribs or playpens.

Discard Packaging After Opening

• Plastic and cellophane packaging should not be available for young children to place inside their mouths or inhaled.
• Some of the packaging parts may have sharp points and/or be a choking hazard.

Avoid Toys with Loud Noises and Sounds

• Make certain that the decibel level of the toy's sounds does not exceed the acceptable standards set for young children.

Choose Toys That Challange and Encourage Learning

• Select toys that offer exploring and problem solving skills - that will enhance growing and emerging skills.
• Buy toys that are fun, challenge the imagination and delight children as they learn through play.
