Morgellons is a rare disease , identified in 2002 by Mary Leitao. Her son was afflicted by the disease, which involves an unexplained skin condition. The symptoms range from having the sensation of bugs crawling beneath the skin to severe itching. People with this disease have also experienced unexplained rashes and sores. Mrs. Leitao had studied biology and took it upon herself to examine her son’s skin. She found strange colored fibers sprouting from the skin. This was a very disturbing and unusual finding that no other doctor could explain. But through Mrs. Leitao’s research efforts, she found out that Morgellons was not a new disease, and there were many other people suffering from the same condition.

When Leitao began investigating, she examined her son’s skin under a toy microscope and found strange fibers stemming from the sores. The fibers came in different colors and lengths, and did not stem from clothing. While she believed these fibers were the cause of her son’s condition, she could find no doctor willing to substantiate her findings.

Leitao and her husband had scientific backgrounds and therefore knew, that the fibers were some kind of organic matter causing their son’s strange skin condition. But, they could not find any other disease that had the same symptoms. They continued to seek professional, medical help but, no one could come up with an answer.

She went to many doctors who would not be able to explain the strange fibers. All test results, including blood work, would come normal, revealing no abnormalities. Many of the doctors would suggest psychiatric evaluations, but she knew this was a medical condition, not a mental condition. She eventually became used to doctors suggesting there was nothing wrong, but, she continued to search for reasons behind her son’s skin syndrome. At some point, she would decide to give the disease a name, which she called Morgellons. She would later start a research foundation, to find out more about the disease and to help others with the condition.

As the result of her research and advocacy for additional investigation into Morgellons disease, many other cases were identified in the United States and abroad. While there is still no cure for the disease, it is now known to afflict many other individuals. The CDC continues to list it as an unexplained dermopathy.
